Swatches in Adobe Illustrator

In the previous tutorial you had learn to save a new Gradient permanently in Adobe Illustrator, which is quite helpful as you need not have to create the same gradient again for another artwork, and today you will learn to save a new Swatch.

Before learning this first create a shape and fill it with a color which is not available in the Swatches Panel. You can choose the color from Color Picker Window or from Color Guide Panel.

If you have created a shape and filled it with a new color, which is not pre-defined in Swatches Panel, then follow the below process to save your new color swatch.

Saving a New Swatch:

Select the shape filled with a new color and click on New Swatch icon. You will find this icon in the Swatches Panel next to the New Color Group icon. I have shown in the below image the New Swatch icon.

Swatches in Adobe Illustrator

To save the new swatch permanently, click on Swatch Libraries Menu and then click on Save Swatches. Save As window will appear and you can rename the swatch and then click on Save.

Swatches in Adobe Illustrator

Now your new swatch is permanently saved. When you will open a new document you will not see this swatch in the swatch panel but you can open it from Swatches Libraries Menu by clicking on User Defined.

Now give it a try and save your new swatches so that you need not have to create them again and again or waste your time in the color picker to get the exact shade.

How to permanently save custom Gradients in Adobe Illustrator?

Save Gradients in Adobe Illustrator

While coloring an artwork, we all create custom gradients to fill color of our choice but do you know that you can save those custom gradients permanently for future use.

If you don’t save them then next time when you will be in need of that color you have to create it again which will consume your valuable time.

Today I am going to teach you how to save your unique gradients.

Let’s begin…

Saving a New Gradient:

First of all draw something and fill it with custom gradients. Create your own gradient. Do not use the pre-set gradients.

After filling your drawing with a unique gradient which is not already available in the Swatches Panel, select the drawing and click on a folder like icon in the Swatch Panel. That folder like icon is called New Color Group.

Save Custom Gradients in Adobe Illustrator

When you will click on New Color Group a window will appear. In that window you can name that color group and you can even select the option of either creating the color group from the swatches used to create that gradient or you can select the color group from the artwork. After making changes accordingly click on OK.

Save Custom Gradients in Adobe Illustrator

After clicking OK you will notice that the color group created is appearing in the Swatches Panel but it is not permanently saved yet. When you will create a new document you will not see that color group there.

Save Custom Gradients in Adobe Illustrator

Now let’s save the new color group permanently. For that, click on Swatch Libraries Menu. It is at the bottom left corner of the Swatches Panel. After clicking on Swatch Libraries Menu select Save Swatches.

Save Custom Gradients in Adobe Illustrator

After selecting Save Swatches, Save As Window will appear. You can rename the File Name and then Click on Save.

Save Custom Gradients in Adobe Illustrator

Now your custom gradient is saved permanently. To use this gradient in new document follow the following process-

How to convert a Raster Image into a Vector Artwork in Adobe Illustrator?

Vector Artwork from a Raster Image

The image which consists of pixel is called the Rater Image and the artwork created in the Illustrator is a Vector Artwork and it does not contain pixels. It is made up of points. The benefit is that you can stretch your artwork to any size and the quality of the artwork will not be affected.

Today you will learn to create a Vector Artwork from a Raster Image and for that you have to first select an image which you want to convert. So be quick and finalize an image.

If you are done with the image then let’s begins the tutorial.

Step 1

Create the document and click on File in the Menu Bar. Now click on Place and browse the image which you want to create into a vector artwork. Select the image and then click on the workspace to insert the image.

If required you can crop the image inserted with the help of Crop Image Button and you can resize it.

Step 2

After inserting the image and setting its size, lock the image. You can either hit Ctrl + 2 or go to the Layer Panel and lock the image layer.

Vector Artwork from a Raster Image

Step 3

After locking the image, remember to disable the fill by selecting No Fill and choose a stroke of dark color.

Now Select the Pen Tool form the Tool Panel to start drawing. Create an anchor point by clicking on any part of the image but only that part which you want to draw. The image which I have selected is an image of a character from a popular game. I will start by drawing his helmet. So I will create the anchor point by clicking on the outer line of the helmet.

Vector Artwork from a Raster Image

You can Zoom In to see the image properly and create perfect paths to outline the image. You can see in the above image how I have Zoomed In the image and created the path.

Step 4

In the same way, trace whole of the area which you are drawing. Remember to create close ended paths otherwise you will not be able to fill the colors properly, i.e., the end anchor point of the path should meet the starting anchor point of the path. (See the below image)

Vector Artwork from a Raster Image

Step 5

When you will trace whole of the parts of the image, your outlines created on the image will look like this as shown in the below image.

Vector Artwork from a Raster Image

Press Ctrl + A and then Click on Group Button in the Properties Panel to group all the paths. With the help of Selection Tool drag the Grouped Path away from the image.

Vector Artwork from a Raster Image

Color Time

As your image has been traced and all the outlines have been created now it’s time to color it. You can either use Eyedropper Tool or you can fill color of your own choice.

After filling color, Unlock the image layer and delete it and place your artwork on the artboard.
