How to add an image in each letter in Adobe Illustrator?

Previously you had learned to add photographic texture to the text. In that you had placed a single image inside the whole text but in today’s tutorial you will learn to add separate image for each letter.

Adding an effect to the text give a now look to the artwork by making it more attractive and unique.

You must be eager to learn this new effect so let’s get started with the tutorial.

Step 1

With the help of Type Tool type your text. Use separate type box for each word. As you can see in the below image I have typed the word Michael Jackson. Firstly, I have selected type tool and typed Michael and then I clicked below the word to use separate type box for another word, i.e., Jackson.
Remember to select a good font type for your text so that the image is properly visible.

Step 2

In the next step select the word and with right click option window will pop up. Select Create Outlines. You will notice outlines on each letter. We have done this so that we can Ungroup the letters. In the below image you can see that I have selected the word Michael to create outlines and the same I have done with the other word.

After creating outlines on each letter click on Ungroup. There are two ways to do this. Either you select the word and right click on your mouse and select Ungroup from the option window or you can simply click on the ungroup button which is in the Properties Panel. The Ungroup Button is shown in the below image.

Step 3

As you have ungrouped the letters, click on the first letter to select it. Like, I have clicked on the first letter M. Now click on Draw Inside (it is shown in the below image). When you will click on Draw Inside you will see black dotted corners around the letter selected.

When such dotted corners appears hit SHIFT + CTRL + P to place/insert the image inside the letter or you can click on File in the Menu Bar and then click on Place to browse the image to be added to the letter.

Step 4

If you have browsed the image then click on the letter selected and the image will be placed inside it. You can resize the image to fit it properly inside the image and you can drag the image up and down to select that part of image which you want to be viewed inside the letter.

Step 5

The image is placed in the first letter. Double click on the artboard to deselect the first letter and click on the second letter. Click on Draw Inside and this time the dotted corner will be around the second letter.

Hit SHIFT + CTRL + P and browse the image and insert it in the letter in the same way as you have placed it in the first letter.

Step 6

Repeat STEP 3 and STEP 4 with each and every letter to insert the image.

By following the above steps you will have a separate image in each letter and this will make you text look unique.
