How to create an Illusion Effect in Adobe Illustrator?

Illusion Effect in Adobe Illustrator

Today’s tutorial is a step ahead of previous tutorial. In previous tutorial we had created Layered Artwork and in today’s tutorial we will create an Illusion Effect 😵 with the help of the Layered Artwork.

If you have not viewed the previous tutorial on How to create Layered Artwork then click on the below link-

Illusion Effect in Adobe Illustrator

Step 1

Launch Adobe Illustrator and create a new document. Now draw a shape and create layers in the same way as we had created in previous tutorial. (The link of the previous tutorial is mentioned above)

Illusion Effect in Adobe Illustrator

The layers are creating the Illusion Effect but we can do more with these layers to increase the effect of Illusion.

Step 2

Now select the second inner most layer and click on Object in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on Transform and select Rotate.

Illusion Effect in Adobe Illustrator

A dialogue box will appear on clicking on Rotate. Set the angle of rotation and click OK.

Illusion Effect in Adobe Illustrator

Similarly rotate the other layers but remember the angle rotation will be increasing in each layer.

For instance, if you have set the angle of rotation for the second inner most layers at the value of 10o then the angle of rotation for the third inner most layers will be more than 10o and the angle of rotation will keep on increasing so on.

Step 3

After rotating each layer the shape will look like this-

Illusion Effect in Adobe Illustrator

If you want you can add color to your Illusion Effect.

Fill the color from brighter to lighter shade.

Illusion Effect in Adobe Illustrator

Look at the center point (the inner most layer) for few seconds without moving your eyelids. You will feel like the outer layers are revolving.

Enjoy this Illusion Effect and try to create your own.

How to create a Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator?

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

In today’s tutorial, we will create a Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator. You can create multiple layers of an object or shape and create a layered artwork.

This layered artwork also creates an illusion effect. This we will learn in next tutorial.

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

Step 1

We will start by creating a new document in Adobe Illustrator. Now select the Pen Tool or the Pencil Tool and draw a shape of which you want to create Layered Artwork.

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

(I have created this shape with the help of Ellipse Tool and Bloat effect. If you want to know the steps then write it in the comment section.)

Now select the shape and click on Object in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on Path and click on Offset Path.

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

Offset Path dialogue box will appear when you will click on Offset Path. In that dialogue box enter the value of Offset. If the shape which you have created is small in size then the value of Offset will be positive and if the size of the shape is large then enter a negative value in Offset.

I have set the Offset value as -25 pt.

You can put a checkmark on Preview to see the result.

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

Step 2

In this step we create more layers in the similar way as we have created in Step 1.

Select the inner layer created with the help of Offset Path and again go to the Menu Bar and click on Object. Place the cursor on Path and select Offset Path. If you want to have similar gaps between the layers then enter the same value of Offset which you had entered earlier.

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

Object > Path > Offset Path

Repeat the above process as many times as much layer you want to create.

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

Step 3

We will fill colors in the layers in this step.

After creating the layers we will color them. While filling colors in the layers we have to keep one thing in mind that the inner most layer will have a dark color filling and the shade of the color will reduce in each layer.

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

Color Guide will be useful in selecting the shades for the layers.

Step 4

We have created the layers and filled colors in them but still the artwork is missing something.😕
It is missing the effect which will make it look a Layered Artwork.

We will use the Inner Glow Effect. Select the whole artwork and go to Menu Bar and click on Effect. Place the cursor on Stylize and select Inner Glow.

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

In Inner Glow dialogue box, you can change the color of the glow and other settings if required. After that, click on OK to apply the effect.

Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator

So these are steps with the help of which you can create Layered Artwork in Adobe Illustrator.
In next tutorial we will go a step further in this process to create an illusion effect.
