Vortex in Adobe Illustrator

In today’s tutorial, we will create Vortex in Adobe Illustrator with the help of Pen Tool, Ellipse Tool, 3D Revolve Effect, and a few other tools and effects.

Launch Adobe Illustrator and create a new document. Now follow the steps below:

Step 1

Select the Pen Tool and draw a few straight lines on the artboard as shown in the below image. Turn off the Fill color for the lines.

Select all the lines and change their Width Profile.

Step 2

Let the lines be selected and click on Object in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on Path and select Outline Stroke.

Now change the fill color of the lines to #a9ddf3 and save them as a Symbol.

To save these lines as Symbol, open the Symbols Panel and drag these lines into the panel. When you will release the right click, the Symbol Options dialogue box will appear on the artboard. In that dialogue box, you can give a name to your symbol and then click OK.

Step 3

Now select the Ellipse Tool and draw a circle on the artboard.

Now select the Pen Tool and draw a rectangle covering the bottom left quarter of the circle. (See the image below)

Now select both the shapes and press Shift + Ctrl + F9 to open the Pathfinder Panel. In the Pathfinder Panel, select Intersect.

Step 4

Select the shape produced and click on Effect in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on 3D and select Revolve.

When you will click on Revolve, the 3D Revolve Options dialogue box will appear on the artboard. In that dialogue box, put a checkmark on Preview and then manually set the position of your Vortex.

Now click on the Map Art button to open the Map Art dialogue box. In that dialogue box, select the Vortex surface and then click on the drop-down button to select your symbol.

Now click on the Scale to Fit button and put a checkmark on Invisible Geometry.

Check the Preview and click OK.

Step 5

Now select the Rectangle Tool and draw a rectangle covering the artboard. Press Shift + Ctrl + [ to send the rectangle at the back and fill the rectangle with a radial gradient.

This is how you can create Vortex in Adobe Illustrator. If you wish you can add more lines in your Vortex manually with the help of Pen Tool or Ellipse Tool.
